Career Cocktail
![]() |
To all the lawyers out there: Is it a bad idea to get a full back tattoo when I work in a law firm?
I'm a dedicated, intelligent, and resourceful (future) lawyer currently working part-time at a firm while going to law school. I am on law review, the moot court board, I have a high GPA-- so would it be a career-destroyer to get a full back tattoo? I wouldn't wear anything to work or court that would show it, so the only work-related place where it could be visible would be at cocktail parties. I've always wanted it, and I don't want to stifle my self-expression because of my job.
Tattoos are becoming more socially acceptable but there are still some that think they are a sign of low morals and lower intelligence. Whether a specific employer thinks that way, I could only guess. Law firms tend to be conservative because they are concerned about profits and therefore clients. You must know that some clients would frown on body art -- and think poorly of someone with a tattoo, Therefore, many employers will also.
Even in the public sector, the employer is concerned about the thoughts of others, such as judges.
I knew a soldier who got a lovely tattoo on his chest. He later married an officer who went on to achieve high rank and now associates with senators and congressmen. They have to avoid social invitations that might require removing a shirt, such as pool parties and picnics, because tattoos are just not acceptable (yet) in those circles.
