Can anyone advise me how to sew buttons on a reversible coat, to allow ease when buttoning from either side?
I've made this coat before, but have always had difficulty buttoning the garment. I try to keep the stitches loose while attaching the buttons. I attach both buttons at the same time. The coat is fleece and the extra bulk gets in the way, when trying to button. Can't do anything about the bulk, but I need a better way to work the buttons. I've even tried to put a shank button on one side...still trouble with the "flat" button on the other side(I don't want shank on both sides)
These are all good suggestions, but I'm looking for an easier method for a reversible coat. Dealing with toothpicks and such is very awkward when trying to work two buttons at the same time.
My Aunt gave me a good suggestion a few days ago when I was sewing buttons on a pair of slacks for men. (The oriignal buttons had popped off and I was sewing new ones on.)
She suggested putting a cotton ball (or cotton pad) between the button and the fabric and sewing through that. Then, when the button(s) are sewn on, simply remove the cotton fibers by pulling them. This will leave space between the buttons and fabric.
I wasn't sewing on fleece, but it would appear that the cotton ball method would work for you on your reversible coats.
(Ahh. The ingenuity of the older generation!)
