How can i alter this dress?
Hi all i have bought a dress for a fancy dress party it has a sort of corset with the zip at the back. I can do it up but it is slightly tight and since i got it from a vintage shop it was the only one and only £15 so i thought i would buy it.
Well the question is how can i change it so its not as tight? I was thinking something like just safety pinning it? We also have a sewing machine!
Thanks In Advance
A couple of ideas:
Take the existing zip off and sew more material at the back with a new zip to fasten that material. If the dress has a few colours, i.e. it's mostly black with red bits, use red fabric for the extra bit.
Leave the existing zip on (unzipped) and sew a new zip in between to make an unusual double-zip type thing.
Alternatively, take the zip off and sew buttons down one side, with long loops on the other side, so you can fasten it but it still has give.
Finally, if you don't want your back to be exposed, sew some material wide enough in the gap so that it will fit you. You only need to sew it down one side, as once the dress is done up, you can tuck the other side in smoothly - as well as get the dress on! Then sew small loops, or make small holes, all the way down the original opening of the dress down both sides, and weave a ribbon in and out like a shoe lace - make it more of a proper corset!
